Atlantis Rising by Gloria Craw
Genres: Young Adult, Fantasy, Romance
Date of Publishing: 6th January, 2015
Publisher: Entangled Teen
My Rating: ★★★

I am different. I have always been different, but no one can know or my life will be in danger. So I hide in plain sight, wearing drab clothes and thick glasses and trying to be invisible. I’m so good at hiding, no one has ever noticed me. Until Ian…the mysterious and oh-so-cute boy I know I need to avoid.

Now I have been seen. And more terrifying still, I am wanted—by those who would protect me and those who would destroy everything and everyone I love. But if they’re all terrified about who I am, wait until they see what I can do…

Alison McKyes is hell-bent on blending in with the crowd. Which is a real weird, right? She’s a pretty seventeen year old with nothing to hide, but she goes out of her way to make no one in her school ever pays attention to her. So why does she do it? Is there something missing here?

At the cost of giving away a very teeny tiny spoiler, let me say this: Alison is very, very special. She has an ability that is really, really unique and I loved reading about her throughout the book. Which is new for me, since I tend to hate on YA heroines more often than not, but Alison was a definite exception. She was both sweet, and naïve and being completely clueless about the extent of her powers gave her a vulnerability that I came to adore.

And then suddenly the part-of-the-wall image she’s created for herself starts to waver when a certain hottie Ian Palmer and his preppy sister Brandy Palmer start to pay more attention to her than she appreciates.

I definitely liked the world building in the book. The lost city of Atlantis has so many myths surrounding it and Gloria Craw’s world seemed so believable…it was amazing! The story about the creatures that inhabited the city, its downfall, their current state and the future of these people; all of this was explained and it kept me intrigued right up until the end.

The romance in this book wasn’t too overwhelming, because there was a huge problem at hand, but I almost liked it that way. I wasn’t shipping the ship in this book too hard, but they’re both pretty young and I think maybe with time, they’ll be a couple I’d like to read 🙂
